MARHABA EUROPA. Speakertour of grassrootsmovements from the Middle East (29 Nov - 3 Dec 2004)
Building networks of resistance against the rethoric of the "clash of civilisations".

Nederlands - Français

FC Poppesnor would like to accept the invitation that we received by email and calls on all women's and feminist organisations to be present at one of the info moments / meetings (see program).

Clash of Civilisations?

The “clash of civilisations”-rhetoric reigns supreme. The picture of the Middle East is dominated by not very progressive clichés from the media: Islam-fundamentalists versus equally fundamentalist Jewish colonialists.

With a speakers’ tour, Marhaba Europe wants to disrupt this rhetoric by letting progressive grassroots-voices speak. This way, the Middle East gets a much more nuanced face full of diversity. Arabic and Jewish activists find each other in joint resistance against old and new forms of oppression going from war and occupation to the repression of sexual diversity. With their cooperation they disrupt the stereotypical enemy-images without losing radicalism.

An example from which we can learn something here in Europe as well?

Saif Abukeshek, Palestinian refugee active in the International Solidarity Movement (ISM)
Itay Greenstein, Israelian conscientious objector active in Women in Black
Heidi Niggemann, German activist in the ISM and the German campaign against the Wall
Sara Abu Gazal, Palestinian living in Lebanon active around the situation of Palestinian refugees, active in the feminist and lesbian & gay movement and in Indymedia Beirut

There will be simultaneous-translation from English to Dutch (and vice versa).
